Otters class

Mrs Jones and Miss Warren

Welcome to Otters with Mrs Jones and Miss Warren. We are looking forward to an exciting year ahead.  In Otters we have high expectations of ourselves and each other and are always striving to be better learners.

In English we will be reading lots of fantastic books which will inspire a range of writing. Before half-term our English lessons will be based on The London Eye Mystery by Siobhan Dowd and The Mischievians by William Joyce; in November and December we will read The Explorer by Katherine Rundell and The Day the Crayons Quit by Drew Daywalt. Spelling, grammar and handwriting will be a daily focus. We will also be visiting Chard library to explore their fantastic range of books.

In mathematics our key topics are place value, calculation and fractions. Arithmetic, problem solving and reasoning will all be very important skills in year 6.

In History, Otters will be finding out about the life of former Chard resident Margaret Bondfield and investigating the impact of her role as the first female MP. By the end of the half term, we will be able to evaluate Bondfield’s impact on the development of British democracy. We will be visiting the Houses of Parliament to support this topic.

In Geography, we will be learning about climate zones and biomes, including the effects that Climate change is having on the world around us.

In Science our first topic is electricity. Our second topic is Light, including how we see. We are lucky to have a local Optometrist visiting us as part of this topic.

Building on our learning in science, in DT we will be creating alarm systems. In art, we will be completing lots of exciting projects. The children will continue to be taught Portuguese by Mrs Gomes. P.E will be multi-skills and tag rugby.

In year 6 children will be set weekly Maths and English homework. They are also expecting to read 5 times a week. Homework club will run on a Monday.
