Miss Brown and Mrs Crump

Welcome to Magpies with Miss Brown and Mrs Crump. The children are settling into Year 2 beautifully and are full of enthusiasm for the year ahead. We have very high expectations of all children, and they are already working very hard to achieve their best. They are very enthused with the topic of Stringfellow and are excited to learn how he has changed our lives.    


In English we will be launching the autumn term with the book ‘The Invisible’ by John Percival. For the rest of the term, we will focus our writing around ‘Mrs Armitage on Wheels’ and ‘George’s Dragon Goes to School’. We will be writing a narrative, recount, letter, instructions and much more. Throughout the autumn term, we will be learning key grammar terms and practising applying these in our writing. As a year group, we will continue to practise our handwriting. 


In Mathematics we will be beginning the term by learning about place value. The children will learn how many tens and ones are in a two-digit number and improve their fluency with counting in steps of 2, 5 and 10 and be introduced to counting in 3s. We will then move on to addition and subtraction with two-digit numbers.  


Our topic this term is Chard. Within History we will learn about flight, looking at John Stringfellow and the Wright Brothers to enable us to answer the enquiry question ‘How did Stringfellow change the way we live now?’. In Science we will be learning about animals, including humans. We will start by learning that animals and humans have offspring and how these offspring do not always look like their adult. Then, we will focus on healthy living with regards to food, exercise and hygiene. We will use our knowledge from science to prepare a healthy meal in DT. Our Art will be inspired by ‘Jenny Mellings’. In RE we will be answering the question ‘What do Jewish people believe about the Torah?’.  


Magpies will be taught PE on a Friday afternoon. Please support your child at home by listening to them read 5 times a week and recording this in their reading record. Homework will be set on a Friday and will need to be handed in by the following Thursday.
