Magpies class

Miss Brown and Mrs Crump

Welcome to Magpies Class with Miss Brown and Mrs Crump. The children are settling well into Year 2 and are full of enthusiasm for the year ahead.

In English, we are launching the autumn term with the book ‘Once Upon a Fairytale’ by Natalia and Lauren O’Hara. For the remainder of the term, our writing will focus on the books ‘Mrs Armitage on Wheels’ by Quentin Blake and ‘The Invisible’ by Tom Percival. We will write narratives, diaries, recounts, letters, instructions and much more. Throughout the autumn term, we will be learning new spelling rules and key grammar terms such as word classes, sentences with different forms, tenses and conjunctions and applying these in our writing. As a year group, we will continue to practise our handwriting and begin to learn how to join.

In Mathematics, we will begin the term by learning about place value. The children will learn to identify the tens and ones in a two-digit number and how to partition these in different ways. They will improve their fluency with counting in steps of 2, 5 and 10 and be introduced to counting in 3s. Throughout the rest of the term, we will focus on developing different strategies for addition and subtraction, using the multiplication symbol to calculate times tables and describing the properties of 2D shapes.

In Science, we will be learning about animals, including humans. We will learn about animals and their offspring, basic needs for survival and key factors of healthy living including food, exercise and hygiene. Our Geography topic this term is ‘Wonderful Weather’. We will be learning about seasonal and daily weather patterns in the United Kingdom and locating hot and cold areas of the world in relation to the Equator and the North and South Poles. In History, we will be learning about significant historical people and events in our own locality by studying John Stringfellow and the Wright Brothers We will answer the enquiry question ‘How did Stringfellow change the way we live now?’. We will be making planes in Art and designing and making our own moving vehicles in DT. In RE, we will be answering the question ‘What do Jewish people believe about Torah?’.

Magpies will be taught P.E on a Thursday and Friday afternoon.

Please support your child at home by listening to them read 5 times a week and recording this in their reading record. Homework will be set on a Friday and will need to be handed in by the following Thursday.
