Welcome to Herons with Mrs Hall, Mrs Jones and Mrs Stoker. We are looking forward to an exciting year ahead. In Herons we have high expectations of ourselves and each other and are always striving to be better learners.
In English we will be beginning the term by learning key grammar terms and practising applying them to our writing. Following our trip to London we will be reading The London Eye Mystery by Siobhan Dowd and creating our own mystery story based on the book. We will also be writing explanation texts and learning about Greek Myths. After half term we will be writing a range of different text types based on a range of engaging and exciting books and film clips. In mathematics our key topics are place value, calculation and fractions. Arithmetic, problem solving and reasoning will all be very important skills in year 6.
At Manor Court this term our topic is Chard. Herons will be finding out about the life of former Chard resident Margaret Bondfield and investigating the impact of her role as the first female MP. By the end of the term we will be able to evaluate Bondfield’s impact on the development of British democracy. We will be visiting the fantastic Bondfield exhibition at Chard Museum to support this topic.
In Art we will be studying the works of Doris Hatt and creating our own collage of Chard in her style. In Science our first topic is electricity. Our second topic is Light, including how we see. We are lucky to have a local Optician visiting us as part of this topic.
In Herons we are very lucky to have Mr Jackson, a specialist coach, teach Multi-skills on a Wednesday afternoon. Mrs Nadeau will be teaching RE-this term the topic is Hinduism. On Monday afternoons we will be swimming.
