Welcome to Herons with Mrs Hall, Mrs Jones and Mrs Stoker; we are enjoying Year 6.
In Herons we have high expectations of ourselves and each other and are always striving to be better learners.
In English we will be beginning the term by reading the novel Skellig, by David Almond. This will inspire our writing for the first 2 weeks. After that, we will then be reading The Explorer by Katherine Arundell and writing an adventure story based in the Rainforest. Throughout the Spring term we will be learning key grammar terms and practising applying them to our writing.
In mathematics we will be covering all of the key areas: statistics, number and calculation, fractions, ratio, measurement, algebra and geometry. Arithmetic, problem solving and reasoning will continue to be very important skills in year 6.
In our topic work this term we will be answering the enquiry question ‘How have different species evolved and adapted to their place in the world?’ Most of this learning will have a science focus-our two topics are Evolution and Habitats. These topics will be complemented by our geography unit on climate zones and biomes.
Our Art and Design and Technology units will be inspired by Evolution; we will be designing a new creature. In computing we will be using Scratch and learning about staying safe online. Art will be taught by Mrs Morton and music by Mrs Johns.
