Hedgehogs Class

Miss Grabham, Mrs Wilmington and Mrs Birks

Welcome to Hedgehogs class with Miss Grabham. In Hedgehogs class the children will be supported by Mrs Willmington and Mrs Birks. We are looking forward to learning about one another, discovering new things, making new friendships and settling into school life.

In Hedgehogs we are friendly, and we take care of one another. We look after our classroom and take pride in all our work. Our term will start with us getting used to our new school layout and getting to know each other using our talking toolkits.

Our termly enquiry question is ‘Chard, where do I live?’.  This links in with our half termly topics of ‘All about me’ and ‘Festivals’.   As part of these topics, we will visit our local library and St Mary’s Church. We will find out about the children, where they live, exploring our environment, looking at our favourite books and discovering what festival and traditions the children celebrate.  We also plan to invite families in to see an exhibition of our ‘All about me’ topic work and our Nativity play.

In English this term we will introduce daily phonics through a mix of ‘Letters and Sounds’ and ‘Jolly Phonics’. We will encourage the children to develop accurate and neat letter formation and encourage writing for a range of purposes.  We will be constantly fostering a love of reading and language by reading at least one story per day, having daily rhyme time and discussing the new vocabulary that we find in the books we read. We will also be supporting your child to develop their speaking and listening skills by providing them with lots of opportunities to speak to others in full sentences and discussing the skills needed to be a good listener.

In maths we will focus on recognising and working with numbers to ten, learning about what happens when we add and double numbers. Children will also start to investigate number patterns such as odd and even numbers

We will also be supporting your children to develop their social and emotional skills, physical skills, understanding of the world and expressive art and design through a range of adult supported and play based activities on a daily basis.

Children will also have weekly P.E, R.E and music lessons.

Contact can be made via Eylog message, which we will check regularly.  You can also expect a weekly Eylog update. Letters sent from the school office will be sent via ParentPay.

We welcome parental involvement, if you are interested in volunteering in Hedgehogs class please come and speak to us. All volunteers will require a police check that can easily be arranged by the school.

Thank you
