Welcome to Puffins class in Year 4, taught by Mrs Terry, with support from Mrs Anjos, Mrs Gray and Mrs Stoodley. We have had an action-packed Autumn Term which included a trip to Dorchester museum, a Roman art day, Roald dahl day, egg and woodlice investigations in Science, bug-hunting, baking biscuits, mad maths challenges and writing letters of persuasion to save our break times! We finished the term with a beautiful Christmas carol concert to parents in St. Mary’s Church. We have certainly made a great start to the year, and are working hard to achieve our best.
In Maths, we will be continuing with multiplication and division for the first few weeks back, before moving on to measures and fractions. We will use ‘Times Table Rock Stars’ as an incentive to encourage pupils to learn their multiplication tables and the related division facts up to 12 x 12.
Our Science topic for the first half term is ‘Electricity’ and then ‘Sound’ after the February break. The pupils will be using equipment in school to carry out a range of science investigations.
Our History topic for the first half term will centre on the history of the African country Benin. We will be creating African tribal patterns, colour fading with silhouettes and drawing African animals. We have booked an African drumming workshop, and will recreate gum boot dancing routines.
In Geography for the second half of the term, we will look closely at the water cycle.
The children will again take part in E-Safety lessons in Computing, use the program ‘Scratch’, and also develop their touch typing skills. Laptops and ipads will be used weekly for research in History and Geography, and for online dictionaries in English lessons.
We are fortunate in Year 4 to have P.E. taught by Mr Jackson, a qualified coach, and we have a drama and music specialist, Miss Dalwood, who will be teaching one lesson a week in the hall.
If you have any questions about the Year 4 curriculum, please come and speak to us.
We look forward to working with you to support your child’s learning.
