Welcome to Puffins Class!

Mrs Terry

Welcome to Puffins class in Year 4, taught by Mrs Terry, with support from Mrs Anjos, Mrs Gray and Mrs Stoodley. Our Spring Term was short but still full of exciting activities which included a visit from the author Emma Carroll, Sports Relief day, the year 4 play - Aladdin Trouble, African Fab Drumming day and the pantomime Dick Whittington coming to the school . Our Easter service in St. Mary’s church was a lovely close to the term. We are continuing to strive for our best and are looking forward to all the exciting things Summer Term will bring.

In English we begin the first half term examining the book ‘Cat Burglar’ by Tamsin Cooke, who is visiting Manor Court on 23rd April. We will then focus our English around our topic of The Railways, using the famous poem, ‘From a railway Carriage’ by Robert Louis Stevenson and imagining what life would have been like having to leave London as a child during WW2 and catching a train to somewhere unknown. Each English lesson will continue still start with a Spelling, Grammar or Punctuation focus (SPaG).

In Maths we are starting the half term completing our decimals unit, we will then move onto money and time. After measurement we will be interpreting and representing data in a variety of charts for statistics. In Geometry identifying properties of 2D and 3D will take us onto coordinates within a grid.

Our Science topic is ‘State of matter.’ This links closely to our work on the Water Cycle from last term. There will be a lot of investigations as we work scientifically to find out the answers to enquiries. Our first investigation is to find out if gas weighs anything, and how to work out which fizzy drink from a selection, is fizziest.

Our new unit is The Railways. We will learn how railways have changed and developed over the years. We will be focussing on developing the skill of map reading.

The children will take part in E-Safety lessons and continue with word-programming and Scratch. Ipads will be used for research in all subjects.

We are fortunate in Year 4 to have P.E. taught by Mr Jackson, a qualified coach who is focussing on Hand ball, Roller Ball, Athletics and preparing for our Sports Day on 24th May 2018 and we have a drama and music specialist, Miss Dalwood, who will be focussing on dance.

If you have any questions about the Year 4 curriculum, please come and speak to us.

We look forward to working with you to support your child’s learning.
