Welcome to Herons with Mrs Hall, Mrs Jones and Mrs Nadeau; we are enjoying Year 6. We have high expectations of ourselves and each other and are always striving to be better learners.
In English we will be beginning the term by reading the novel Skellig, by David Almond. This will inspire our writing for the first 2 weeks. We will then be writing a short story. Following our trip to the Eden Project in January we shall we writing both a recount and a non-chronological report. Throughout the Spring term we will be learning key grammar terms and practising applying them to our writing.
In Mathematics we will be covering all of the key areas: statistics, number and calculation, fractions, ratio, measurement, algebra and geometry. Arithmetic, problem solving and reasoning will continue to be very important skills in year 6.
In our topic work this term we will be answering the enquiry question ‘How have different species evolved and adapted to their habitat in the world?’ Most of this learning will have a science focus-our two topics are Evolution and Habitats. These topics will be complemented by our geography unit on climate zones and biomes. We are very fortunate to be visiting the Eden Project in January. In March we will be visited by a scientist from the Met Office. Our Art and Design and Technology units will be inspired by Landscapes. In computing we will be using Scratch and learning about staying safe online.
In Herons we are very lucky to have Mr Jackson, a specialist coach, teach P.E on a Monday and Wednesday afternoon. Mrs Nadeau will be teaching RE-this term the topic is Christianity.
